Unsustainable trends

Our home, planet Earth, is currently threatened by a group of related and unsustainable trends:

Population Explosion

In 1830, Earth's population reached the 1 billion mark.  By the year 2000, just 170 years later, that figure had increased over 600% - Earth's population was passing 6 billion people, and accelerating rapidly.   By 2050, only 42 years from now, our population is projected to reach 9 billion people.  Fresh water and other resources may not be available in sufficient quantity to sustain such a population.

Global Warming

The The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in February 2007 projected that if carbon dioxide levels doubled relative to pre-industrial levels, temperatures could rise between 3.6 to 8.1 degrees Fahrenheit by 2100.

Even the lower end of the range will cause more intense hurricanes, droughts, wildfires and flooding.

Species are disappearing

In the current climate of deforestation and pollution, over 70 species vanish forever from our world every day.  Threatened species include the gorilla, gibbon ape, polar bear, cheetah, asian elephant, humpback whale, snow leopard, and many others.polarbear.jpg

The Sierra Club is one of the organizations making a difference

The Sierra Club continues to work to halt these unsustainable trends.   Your nature photograph acquisitions will benefit the Georgia Chapter of the Sierra Club via contributions to the Sierra Club Foundation.
